Estalagem da Ponta do Sol

Estalagem da Ponta do Sol was Madeira's original design hotel — a century-old quinta reimagined in 2001 on top of the cliff above Ponta do Sol, the sunniest point on the island. The renovation kept the stone bones and stripped everything else to a deliberate black-and-white minimalism: nothing competes with the view.

Rooms are quiet studies in restraint — platforms, glass, linen — with balconies or terraces facing the ocean. The cliff-edge infinity pool appears to pour straight into the Atlantic; sunsets here are the daily event, watched from the water or the deck.

A small wellness spa, a restaurant in the old farmhouse and a cultural programme of concerts and installations keep the retreat self-contained. The southwest coast — Calheta, Paul do Mar, the Fanal forest — spreads out below for the days you leave the pool.
